![]() ![]() In 2017, the Arrington Ranch House Lodge the entry drive with its tall, colorful archway and the wide barn out back remained remarkably as they did in “Cast Away,” the 17-year-old movie with some dramatically characteristic scenes of West Texas. In 2017, the ranch house, minus the shrubs and some of the trees, looked much like it did in at the time of Cap’s death and much like it did in the 1970s.Įxcept for the trees and shrubs, not much has changed. The Arrington Ranch remains in the family. Three years later the Englishmen sold their property, and Arrington returned to his own ranch. With the exception of the crop duster sequence, location filming was shot chronologically: New York City, then Chicago and finally Rapid City, South Dakota where some of the Mount Rushmore daytime scenes were filmed. ![]() Midway through its runtime, the film takes time-jump and shows how drastically Tom Hanks’ character Chuck has transformed after living on the island for several years. In 1893, British owners of the 250,000-acre Rocking Chair Ranch, which was headquartered in Collingsworth County, asked Arrington to manage their land and cattle company. Contrary to appearances, the film wasn’t financed by FedEx, despite the prominence of the brand. Location filming for North by Northwest took place between late August and mid-September 1958. The filming of the movie took place for a span of two years, between 1998 to 2000 in many different locations including Fiji, Moscow, Russia, Los Angeles, and Texas. Modriki Island is located in the Mamanuca Island group, which is off the main island of Fiji. During our short stay in Fiji we took a tour out to Modriki Island (also called Monuriki Island), the filming site for the movie Cast Away. The Blue Lagoon and Cast Away were filmed here. They moved to their ranch located along the upper Washita River and its tributaries in Hemphill County about 15 miles north of town. It is a popular location for filming movies. The couple left Mobeetie in 1891, when Arrington resigned as sheriff. It is located about 5 ½ miles north of the out-of-the-way intersection, and it is depicted in both opening and closing scenes of the movie. Mike and his wife also operate a bed and breakfast at the old headquarters home, now called the Arrington Ranch House Lodge. ![]() The Arringtons live in Canadian and their son Mike handles responsibilities associated with the ranch. Hanks then paired the idea with his desire to refashion the desert. In particular, Hanks was interested in exploring the idea of what would happen if a Boeing 747 full of mail packages went down in the Pacific Ocean. North from the lonely, isolated intersection, presumably the direction Hanks’ movie character Chuck Noland planned to take, along the caliche-based CR 5 is George and Jane Arrington’s Ranch. While Cast Away was scripted by writer William Broyles Jr., the premise of the film came from star Tom Hanks. With passion the sometimes mulish Kiowa leader Satanta in 1867 described his feelings for the region: “I love the land,” he said, “I love to roam over the wide prairie … and when I do, I feel free and happy.” In the 1830s George Catlin, who toured the plains to record Indian life and customs, noted that the region was “a place where the mind could think volumes but the tongue must be silent that would speak, and the hand palsied that would write.” ![]()
